Researchers at the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division at Point Magu, CA and Shields Environmental Cooperation through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) have developed a mobile safety structure for the storing and handling of hazardous materials. This structure comprises a secondary containment feature in the form of a containment pan with a removable grating that comprises the floor. This structure also features seismic secondary containment shelving, a four hour fire rating, and Grade A shock certification by the military. The mobile safety structures can be readily transported using a flatbed trailer, military transport planes, or towed on the flight line. In addition these structures are completely modular and can be stacked or linked to provide a variety of configurations. Each mobile safety structure features: all steel construction; a nominal size of 21' x 8'6" x 9'6"; an approximate tare weight of 9,800 lbs.; a secondary containment sump capacity of 725 gallons; a 440/220/110 converter for maximum flexibility of electrical requirements on land or at sea; explosion proof lighting, windows, and doors; adjustable seismic secondary containment shelving; anti-corrosive and chemical resistant interior and exterior coatings; and a heavy duty tow bar and dual wheel casters on all four corners. Optional HVAC, fire suppression, and computer database systems can also be used.
The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division at Point Mugu is currently seeking partnerships with industries to further develop other applications for the mobile safety structure for hazardous materials. This concept was developed by Norman S Van Valkenburgh and subsequently awarded U.S. Pat. No. 5,511,908. The Naval Air Warfare Center is continuing to develop and pilot test novel applications for this invention, and is currently in search of partners to market and further commercialize this concept. Licensing opportunities are available for the development and the manufacture of other applications using this technology.
