CALSTART'S PROJECTS ARE FERTILE BREEDING GROUND FOR NEW COMPANIES CALSTART, California's leading advanced transportation technologies consortium, is a non-profit organization of more than 180 public and private entities located in Burbank, California. Formed in 1992 to stimulate growth in advanced transportation, the consortium has developed a business incubator program, called Project Hatchery. Business incubators play a critical role in helping start-up companies dig in at the ground floor of new industries by providing much-needed services and facilities. CALSTART's Project Hatchery offers a wealth of resources: affordable workspace; CALSTART's machine shop, test laboratory and fabrication facility; a professional network; fund-raising resources; and access to CALSTART's World Wide Web site and state-of-the-art computer simulation design services. Twenty-two companies have taken up residence at Project Hatchery in Burbank. Project Hatchery North is also now a reality. Alameda Naval Air Station, a nexus of naval aviation since World War II, now has a new mission: fighting air pollution and creating jobs for advanced transportation. The Naval Air Station's Hangar 20 has been recommissioned from military to civilian use as a development and manufacturing site for electric and other clean vehicle technologies. Any company involved in advanced transportation can apply for the assistance available through the CALSTART's incubator projects. Laboratories with transportation technologies should also contact CALSTART.
