TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER ACTIVITIES IN THE REGION

SAN DIEGO AREA OFFICE HAS TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER CUSTOMERS FOR YOU!

Encouraged by Congressional mandates, a growing number of companies are tapping into the storehouse of technology available from the federal laboratories, and reaping its many rewards -- reduced R&D costs, improved manufacturing processes, advanced materials and components, use of unique government facilities and equipment, and new commercial products and services.

Last year, under a grant from the NASA Far West Regional Technology Transfer Center, the City of San Diego initiated an effort to assist regional firms in gaining access to this technology. Initially established as a City Economic Development Services program, the Southwest Technology Transfer Center (SWTTC) was later restructured as a non-profit corporation and relocated to the World Trade Center. The SWTTC works closely with the San Diego Regional Technology Alliance and others, in support of economic development and defense conversion activities in the area.

On August 3, 1995, a formal Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between the Naval Command, Control and Ocean Surveillance Center (NCCOSC) and the City of San Diego, which established an alliance for expeditious transfer of technology between NCCOSC and U.S. private- sector firms in the greater San Diego area. The SWTTC has been designated as the City's action agent for the project. On November 7, 1995, a similar collaborative MOA was signed between SWTTC and Sandia National Laboratories, and other agreements are in process.

The greater San Diego area offers a rich and diverse environment of high-tech industry firms. The primary business clusters include: Health Care Products and Services, Business/Financial Services, Tourism and Entertainment, Defense Manufacturing, Electronics Manufacturing, Telecommunications, Software, and Recreational Goods.
